Literature is available in our local library. Carpooling may be available to Alpine AA (Wednesdays) and Al-Anon (Thursdays) meetings. Contact phone numbers are posted on the church doors. AA is not affiliated with any religious organization but is grateful to the Big Bend Church (north of the post office) for allowing us to meet there.
• Big Bend Chamber Music offers several spring concerts. At 6 pm on March 6 at St. James Episcopal Church in Alpine, a newly-formed guitar trio featuring Steve Bennack, Victor Chong, and Justin Rodriguez will perform solo and ensemble pieces from both the classical and modern guitar repertoire
Steven Bennack has been part of the Sul Ross music faculty for 17 years. Victor Chong, a native of El Paso and Ciudad Juarez who earned an associate degree in music from El Paso Community college, currently teaches guitar and is working on his bachelor’s and master’s degrees with Bennack. Justin Rodriguez, also from El Paso, is pursuing an degree in music education with Bennack and plans to teach guitar professionally.
Bennack is well known in the Big Bend for his skill as a guitarist and as a double bass player and pianist in classical music, jazz, rock, musical theater, country and blues.
Chong has studied with Eric Slavin and has developed a wide repertoire in guitar works from Brazil, Paraguay, Spain, Mexico, Germany and the U. S.
In addition to guitar, Rodriguez plays several instruments and also sings bass/baritone with the Sul Ross Choir.
The 45-minute program will feature trio, duet and solo works for classical guitar from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras as well as works from the 20th Century, with an emphasis on Latin American composers.
The free concert is followed by a reception with the artists. St. James is located at N. 6th St. and Ave. A in Alpine.
On April 10 at 6 pm at St. James, Sul Ross music faculty members Heather Ainsworth Dobbins and Christopher Dobbins will join pianist Carol Wallace in an evening of bassoon, trombone and piano chamber music.
And closing out the concert season at 6 pm May 1 at St. James is jazz ensemble Nova Camp featuring Carol Wallace, keyboards; Ron Steinman, drums; Steve Bennack, double bass and guitar; and Kendall Craig, vocals, in a concert of jazz standards.
All concerts are free and those at St. James are followed by a reception with the artists. While every effort is made to adhere to announced performances, programs and dates are subject to change; local media will have any changes the week of the concert.

• Everyone knows that you can’t go home again, but would you want to, really? Perhaps not if the home you finally return to after years of traveling is crazily out of kilter, to say the least. That is Avery Sutton’s situation in Last Minute Low Budget Productions’ (LMLB) “37 Postcards” by Michael McKeever. The play will be staged at the new Cinnabar Theater on Hwy 118 in Terlingua on the last two weekends in March.
LMLB has always had a wide reach in South County, drawing talent from all over, including particularly Big Bend National Park, but this is the first time for them to stage an all-NPS show. Director Joe Sirotnak has cast the entire show from park residents. In addition to utilizing the wealth of thespian talent in the park, this casting facilitates rehearsal without commuting to Terlingua.
The traditional opening gala is set for Friday, March 20, at 7 pm, curtain at 8. Subsequent evening performances run March 21, 22, 27, and 28 with a 2 pm matinee on Saturday, March 28. Plan to visit the Cinnabar for this hilarious comedy; come once, come often.
