According to the Brewster County Sheriff Department on April 9, 2015, a traffic stop by BCSO Deputy, Patrick Hardin resulted in the arrest of a Terlingua resident. Lee Hampton Penland was pulled over for a traffic infraction, by Bee Mountain on State Hwy 118. Three other passengers were in the red suburban, and Penland freely admitted that the passengers were all illegal aliens, and he had been harboring and working them at several places. Two males and one female were detained by Deputy Hardin and Deputy Ben Elmore. All four were transported to the U.S. Border Patrol Checkpoint, where the Mexican Nationals were turned over to USBP Agents. Penland was arrested by Agents and charged with a federal charge of Harboring/Smuggling Illegal Aliens. a felony with up to 5 to 10 years imprisonment, and a heavy fine. The case is under investigation by Homeland Security.

Last month, Marathon resident Lyndell Jay Shackelford was arrested for harboring illegal aliens.
