Goats Can’t Hide Marijuana; busted!
MARFA, Texas – Vigilant Border Patrol agents from the Big Bend Sector’s Marfa Station discovered over $1 million worth of marijuana hidden in a stock trailer full of goats Saturday, March 7. The seizure occurred at the Border Patrol’s Highway 67 checkpoint.
About 2 pm, a man from Dumas entered the checkpoint driving a pickup truck pulling a stock trailer loaded with 18 goats. The man was unable to answer routine questions about ownership of the trailer. Agents investigated further using a backscatter unit to look inside the trailer’s structure. The backscatter unit provides a non-intrusive inspection that shows photo like images of hidden objects.
The agents were also able to confirm the presence of narcotics using a Border Patrol K-9.
The 1,265 packages of marijuana weighed 1,356 pounds.
The man, along with the drugs and the truck and trailer, were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration. The goats were turned over to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The United States Border Patrol relies on checkpoints to help accomplish its goal to secure America’s borders. Checkpoints increase security by eliminating easy routes away from the border for those engaged in illegal cross-border activity.
