Brewster County Commissioners to Consider Tax Rollback Tuesday
Brewster County Commissioners Court will consider an agenda item to accept almost 1,000 petition signatures from county residents to rollback county tax revenue increases by a special election. The county had proposed an increase of over 22% in tax revenues that was met with a broad based rejection from residents to place a ballot initiative to cap the increase to 8%.
According to Brewster County Tax Assessor Betty Jo Rooney, she has certified 931 petition signatures as valid. This is in excess of the approximately 602 registered voter signatures needed to have the issue be placed before voters to formally decide the rollback.
Here is the agenda item set for Commissioners Court on Tuesday morning October 28 at 9:00 am at the Brewster County Courthouse: 5. Rollback Petition Pursuant to Section §26.07, Tax Code
A. Consider and act upon petition for tax rollback election, including determination
of validity of petition in accordance with section 26.07(b) of the Texas Tax Code.
B. Consider and act upon an order calling a tax rollback election in accordance with
section 26.07(d) of the Texas Tax Code and matters related to said election.
