Newsflash: We have a new editor and graphic designer at The Big Bend Gazette: Sam Richardson! At long last I am moving on from being the Editor in Chief and Graphic Designer of The Big Bend Gazette. It’s been a long, wild ride for nearly 11 years, and I am extremely grateful to so many of you for your various wonderful contributions to our monthly publication — and to the hordes of you who are faithful readers.John Waters will remain at the helm as publisher, advertising manager, and investigative journalist par excellence. Waters will be joined by the extremely talented journalist/artist/writer/designer/historian, and spirited raconteur Sam Richardson.

Many of you know Sam or are already familiar with his work, as he ran the Lajitas Sun for many years, was regular south Brewster County columnist for the Alpine Avalanche for many years, and for several months last year, Sam worked as editor and designer at the Avalanche. He’s also a published author and cartoonist. We are delighted to have Sam join the Gazette in this capacity. (Note: He did the lion’s share of the editing and graphic design of our July issue, and wrote a feature about Terlingua boatmen in Taos for the summer. So you’ve already seen his great work most recently in the Gazette.)

Given Sam’s lifelong dedication to writing, journalism, and art, his 17+ years living and working in the Big Bend (most of it in south Brewster County, including a long stint as a boatman on the Rio Grande), his knowledge of most things Texas, and his knowledge of and zeal for the people and land of the Big Bend, I am certain this change in editorial leadership will be a great boon to the Gazette, and for the community at large.

Please join us in welcoming Sam to the helm.

And thank you a thousand times over.

Very sincerely,

Marlys Hersey
