Publisher’s note: Contrary to the assertion made in the following letter to the editor, we did contact Brewster County Judge for comment on the paving of Hovey Road. On March 13 and 14, Gazette Publisher John Waters contacted the judge, requesting an interview; Killingsworth did not respond to those requests.

An article published on a local website on Saturday, April 5, questioned Brewster County’s use of resources for Hovey Road. [See "Little-used county road gets plenty of county resources," by JOhn Waters, Publisher, on this website.]

In a workshop during the Aug. 1, 2013 Brewster County Commissioners Court meeting, the road & bridge superintendent reviewed the department’s five-year plan, which included widening the portion of Hovey Road where it enters Pecos County. During that meeting, commissioners reiterated that maintaining current county roads is the priority.

Hovey Road is a county road and was first paved in 1954. It runs from Hwy 67 up to IH 10, traversing both Brewster and Pecos counties. It is well-traveled by residents and large trucks. The Hwy. 67 entrance is used as a school bus stop.

There are approximately 180 miles of county roads in Brewster County. The road & bridge department estimates that it paves approximately one mile of new road per year.

Neither the Brewster County Judge’s office, nor the road & bridge superintendent were contacted by the publisher for comment on this article.

Kathy Killingsworth, Brewster County Judge
