Letter to the editor (April 7, 2014)
Brewster County Judge Kathy Killingsworth has been the subject of attack after attack throughout this election season, despite a record of solid leadership as the superintendent of Terlingua Common School District, and as a Brewster County commissioner. With little regard for the truth or context of events, or more importantly, the issues facing Brewster County, people seem to be focused on “digging up dirt.”
Judge Killingsworth’s salary as superintendent, which was earned over a period of 27 years, has become the election’s largest issue. Why? Could it be that it’s a distraction from real issues, such as candidate Eleazar Cano’s complete lack of experience or knowledge of the issues? Or his alignment with Alpine Mayor Avinash Rangra? One of Cano’s campaign messages has been collaboration with the City of Alpine. Is collaboration with a government whose finances are a shambles and who is presently undergoing an FBI investigation wise?
It is important that candidates are open and honest. We live in a democracy. Transparency amidst robust discussion is a pillar of our system, as are contested political races. I appreciate those who vote and take an active role in the support of their chosen candidates, but before we start slinging mud, we should carefully study the candidates, their credentials and their experience.
