Little-used county road receives plenty of county resources
By John Waters
Last month, Brewster County Road and Bridge Department workers were busy hauling hundreds of loads of road equipment out to Hovey Road near the Pecos County line, about 25 miles north of Alpine.
Hovey road is a little-used county road with few residents. It is home to former Brewster County Judge Val Beard.
Last August when Commissioner Mike Pallanez made a failed attempt to incorporate some South Double Diamond Roads into the county network, Beard said, “Resources are scarce and the [Road and Bridge] crew and equipment are stretched thin.”
Why the county would spend such scarce resources on such a little used road is a mystery, particularly when county roads with much higher use and population density such as those in Marathon are in need of upgrades. Brewster County Judge Kathy Killingsworth did not respond to numerous requests for comment.
