At St. James Episcopal Church in Alpine, the observance of the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday, March 5, begins with a service at 12:10 pm. The service includes the imposition of ashes and Holy Eucharist. The ashes, a custom with origins in the Middle Ages, serve to remind Christians of life’s swift course and that Lent is a season of introspection and repentance.
At 4 pm on Sunday, March 9, a concert at St. James will feature the music of Johnny Mercer with pianist Carol Wallace and baritone David Beebe. Mercer, who wrote lyrics to the music of dozens of composers including Harold Arlen, Hoagy Carmichael and Henry Mancini, is well known for such songs as ‘Autumn Leaves,” “Come Rain or Come Shine” and “Moon River.” A reception with the artists follows the free concert.
