Huge thunderstorms on May 8 filled this arroyo (above and below) on the western edge of Big Bend National Park, near the west entrance station.
We expect intense thunder and lightning and monsoon rains in July, August, and September. But May? May is the hell month, isn't it? Hot, hot, hot, dry dry dry – and that’s only the beginning of the 5 months + of summer.
This spring, however, we’re getting LOTS of rain, with big, beautiful, intense thunderstorms – in May, no less. Several days a week, it seems, all month long [and continuing on through June!]. And we’re liking it. (Well, I am.) Great shows - and fine drenchings for our plant friends.
Even the hail is fun once in a while, if you’re watching and listening from under a shelter of some sort and not worrying about your garden getting shredded....

Below: Terlingua’s Rough Run Creek was raging on the afternoon of May 8.
